A unseasoned investment banker uses his girlfriend ‘s estranged father, a legendary Wall Street public figure who went to prison referable to his covetousness , to attempt to get retaliation on a rival who ruined his company, all while grappling with a collapsing economic system.
Michael Douglas is the primary cause — heck, the only reason — to check out “Wall Street : Money Never Sleeps,” Oliver Stone’s continuation to his 1987 hit about predators and our fiscal arrangement .
Repeating his Oscar-winning persona as Gordon Gekko, Douglas is older, grayer and mellower. As the movie commences, Gekko is leaving prison after doing eight years for pecuniary high jinks . But he still transudes a penetrative mind, a nose for suspicious trades and the lordliness of a mankind sure he’s the wise guy in the room.
Douglas is nice to see . Little else in this flick is.
Stone, never one to reduce his indignation , seeks to rake Wall Street over the coals for the excesses that contributed to 2008’s financial meltdown and for the bailout that saved Wall Street at the expense of Main Street.
For those who don’t know the deviation between a derivative and a credit default swap, much of “Money Never Sleeps” will sound like a foreign language.
It was in all likelihood a heady decision, then, for film writers Allan Loeb and Stephen Schiff to present the entire flick as a retaliation yarn . After all, every motion picture fan can tie in to that need.
