When we have made the decision to get our teeth whitened then we tend to expect instant results and to have pure white teeth and this sometimes a challenge as we try to explain in more detail.
The starting position of your teeth in terms of their current colouration is the main consideration to how long it will take to whiten them. If you have lighter coloured teeth with mild staining then it is going to be much quicker than someone who has dark yellow or brownish coloured teeth and they will require more concerted effort to get brighter.
Teeth are very complex and by looking at the them and seeing they are discoloured is not always a gauge that they will get really white after whitening so let us explain a little more.
Whitening the teeth really cleanses the enamel which collects staining over a long period of time and for many of us this will be fine, undertake a teeth whitening course and the teeth will brighten and lighten. For people with discoloured dentin underneath the enamel this is somewhat more challenging. These people will have naturally creamy underlying dentin and this colour will reflect through the clearer enamel to portray the colour.
For people with very porous type teeth they will overtime get discoloured dentin through excessive consumption of nicotine, tea, coffee and red wine etc. The staining goes straight through the enamel and then it is too late for teeth whitening for these individuals.
Luckily many of us are not like this and teeth whitening will brighten the teeth in a relatively short period of time.
Types of whitening:
Bleaching trays
This system will involve going to the dentist and having specially made trays to fit the teeth. Placing the trays in the mouth for fourteen nights will slowly whiten the teeth. If you are dedicated to go through the 14 night program you might find that you need to do this a few more times over the following weeks to really get the deeper staining out of the teeth as this will need more deep bleaching to reach.
After the initial treatment then it can be a good idea to keep using the trays to maintain the results plus keep deep bleaching the heavier stained areas of the tooth to keep whitening. The trays you own so you will just buy top up gels from the dentist.
Laser whitening
This method takes one hour to perform and is popular because of the time factor plus it requires no effort as all the work is undertaken by the person performing the treatment. This system is powerful and uses a combination of energy (light and heat) to speed the process.
Again for people with heavy staining a good idea is to have maybe regular top up sessions with the laser to maintain the position and keep working on the darker areas of the teeth.
Whatever you decide always keep regular appointments with the dentist as whitening is no substitute for having good healthy teeth and good overall dental hygiene.
